Ukrainian Pysanky Decorating Class

Saturday, March 25, 2023

Are traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs decorated using a combination of batik artistry, rich symbolism, and folklore dating back over 2,000 years.

Are traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs decorated using a combination of batik artistry, rich symbolism, and folklore dating back over 2,000 years. Designs or motifs on the egg are symbolic and fall within categories of geometric patterns, stylized plants and animals, and religious patterns.

The designs are written with beeswax (not painted) on the egg and dipped into a series of colored dyes. Once completed the wax is melted and rubbed off to reveal the beautiful design. The art form was brought to North America by Ukrainian emigrants who passed the tradition on to their children to keep the custom alive after being banished under the Soviet regime until its rebirth with Ukrainian Independence in 1991.
